A Tutorial on Randomness in Smart Contracts with Haseeb Qureshi

  • Starfish Mission 1535 Mission St. San Francisco, CA 94103 (map)

The scourge of smart contracts: randomness.

Smart contracts are a lot harder than they seem. In this talk, we’ll try to build a simple gambling game that requires some on-chain randomness. This is seemingly simple, but we’ll walk through all of the different approaches and detail how each of them don’t work. Expect to walk away from this talk terrified and ever so slightly closer to madness.

Haseeb is a general partner at MetaStable Capital, a cryptocurrency hedge fund. He is also a cryptocurrency course instructor at the Bradfield School of Computer Science. He was previously a software engineer at Earn.com and Airbnb.
